Hello Friends!
It’s been two years since I posted anything of note to this blog. It’s not because I don’t want to; rather, I just haven’t had much to talk about in the retro gaming space. Most of my gaming has been with modern games such as Enshrouded and The Sims 4 – not really ideal for a blog dedicated to retro games. However, things are changing.
As a few of you may know, I am an avid Audible member who listens to books almost any time I am in the car. I try to alternate between fiction and non-fiction books, unless I am really hyped to read a similar book right after finishing another. This has led me to read some great retro-gaming gems, including several works by Jason Schreier, such as Press Reset: Ruin and Recovery in the Video Game Industry and Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. However, in a recent non-fiction read, I picked up “Fight, Magic, Items: The History of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the Rise of JRPGs in the West” by Aidan Moher. This delightful book takes a walk down memory lane through some of the games I grew up loving and how those projects look now.
This made me realize that I have never, in my entire life, managed to play the first Final Fantasy game. Heaven knows I have tried to play it several times on the original NES and various emulators. I could never get into it, or if I did, I’d reach the first boss fight with Garland and get wiped out. However, I was reminded that CRIWare created a Pixel Remaster of the original game a while ago. I had GREAT fun playing the Pixel Remaster of my beloved Final Fantasy IV and actually forgot that a similar port of Final Fantasy 1 was available. After hearing the story of the game’s creation and the creativity that went into it, I realized I had not given it the chance it deserved – until now.
That is to say that I am now hacking and slashing my way through the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy 1. In fact, I am already at the final dungeon, but the final villain, Chaos, has successfully kicked my ass many times, so I continue to grind until I am better prepared to fight him. If you know the game’s story, then you will know why this is an extremely ironic turn of events. I am thoroughly enjoying this game and learned to accept its idiosyncrasies for what they are. I plan on writing a review soon which brings me to the next fun fact!
I am going to try something different with this review. While I will most certainly type up the normal review, including my staple “Good, Bad, and Ugly” sections. I am going to record a video review of the game and post it on YouTube. Why? Well, a few of you might have seen my YouTube channel, RetroGamerKCD, where I posted streams of my favorite games and even played a few with my son. I have not done much streaming for a variety of reasons, but the effort required to record my reviews (and maybe even throw in some screencaps) is somewhat trivial given my current skills. As a result, I am going to give this a chance to breathe life into my quiet YouTube channel. Stay tuned!
P.S – If all goes well, this will be the first of my blog posts that will also be cross-posted to my Retro Gamer KCD Facebook page. Is it cross-pollination? Sure! Do I mind? Not AT ALL!
See you soon!
